Knowing Your Body Mass Index

By Dietician at 07/07/08 03:58

When I was still a kid, my father as a doctor all of us to get our monthly weight and height. He is always strict when it comes to health issues. Whenever he noticed us losing weight, he would always give us give us vitamins or asked our mother to cook healthier foods. That only stopped when I entered the sixth grade.

It was in 1998 that the government issued a new way of determining whether the person is underweight, overweight, obese or just normal. Before, the only way you can say a person is in any of the said weight category is by determining the gender, the age, height and weight of a person. They used a table where desirable weight and height for a particular age is written. The new method, however, do thing differently.

Body Mass Index or BMI is now the most widely use scale for determining a person's health by mathematical calculation. The new method eliminates the word "ideal body weight" and changed it to "appropriate body weight". Age is however not an essential part of this method. BMI is computed by dividing the person's weight (kilograms) to the person's height in square (meters). I will be using my own data. I am 22 y/o (not very important, but used in other calculations), 5'6" (1.676 meters) 122 lbs. (55.3382691 kg.), therefore....

    square of 1.676 = 2.808976

55.3382691 / 2.808976 = 19.7 BMI (you can round the numbers to shorter figures)

    BMI TABLE

  • Underweight = BMI below 18.5
  • Normal = BMI 18.5-25.0
  • Overweight = BMI 25.0-30.0
  • Obese = BMI above 30.0

So my BMI is 19.7 and as far as the table is concern, I am still normal. Geez, I think I have to gain more weight as I am nearing underweight.

So there, start calculating your body mass index now and get the appropriate weight for you.

Some interesting new research by a doctor has identified several species of parasites and a specific type of goopy plaque that if left in your bowels makes you fat, bloated, developing a pouch and spare-tire belly.

This is the cause of people’s obesity -- fortunately, this research also reveals how to stop it. It further explains that the same cause of why people get fat is also the same reason why people eventually get sick and die prematurely -- often cutting off years from their lives (not to mention the quality of their lives).

People who flush these parasites out, often report rapid weight losses up to 100 lbs or more -- and without changing a single thing about their diets. Not that you need to lose anywhere near that amount... but it does prove how well it works.
