Are you fond of staying late at night, sleeping for some 3-4 hours, and waking up early in the morning to go to work or attend your classes? Well then, do not be surprise if your next medical check up will list Diabetes as one of your diagnosed health problems.
In a study research conducted by Dr. Eve Van Cauter of the University of Chicago, it was found that lack of enough sleep, can do a lot of damage in our body by developing insulin resistance. This means getting at least 6.5 hours of sleep or less is very unhealthy.
Insulin resistance has been found as a result of aging. But chronic sleep deprivation was recently included in the cause of it. Insulin is the sugar regulating hormone of the body, and once our body reacts to indifferently, resistance can build up and Diabetes 2 may likely occur in the next stages.
Insulin resistance needs urgent medical attention. Aside form Diabetes 2, it can also lead to kidney problems, heart problems, total/temporary blindness and worst, amputation of the lower limbs. Aside from insulin resistance, lack of sleep can also increase the risk of high blood pressure as well as obesity.
By this time you might be considering the idea of changing your sleeping patterns. It's a must especially if the reason for your staying up late is really not important. You need to make sure your health is in good condition. Because we all know, health is investment.
