Please give us a short summary of your website?
The Center For Weight Loss and Healthy Living is dedicated to helping you lose weight. Everything for your dieting, weight loss and healthy living can be found here.
What inspired you to launch your own website?
I've been interested in weight loss, diet and nutrition for over 20 years. I thought it would be interesting to set up a web site. I also get to write articles about health, nutrition and weight loss and publish them on my site.
When did you launch your first website, and what was it?
July 2007. I haven't been up a year yet. My site is The Center For Weight Loss and Healthy Living. The URL is www.thecenterforweightloss.com
How did you decide on a name for your website?
I looked for domain names that were applicable. I have since changed the name by adding and Healthy Living to it. I couldn't change the URL. For those of you just starting, I have found that the name is very long for a URL.
What makes it different from other, similar offerings?
I offer lots of free information and articles on weight loss, dieting, nutrition and healthy living. I do have a few items for sale but I do not push them. I also send out diet tips and weight loss hints every ten days upon request.
What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)
I'd like to make some money from the site. Eventually when I get a large number of visitors I will write an ebook on weight loss and sell it.
How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?
I have invested a lot of time and a little bit of money trying to get up in the Google rankings. I have found that I have a topic that is too large to get to number 1 in Google. But I am going to keep trying. It hard to get traffic when no one knows you are there.
If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?
I would advertise using pay per clicks. Or, try submitting my site to some directories that cost money.
If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?
Yes. I don't have anything of my own to sell yet. The information is free. And anything I sell is for affiliates.
What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
I didn't know about search engine optimization when I started out. I never used anchor text. If I had to start over I would probably find a much smaller niche.
What has been your biggest challenge?
Finding the time to sit down and get links to my site. I really want to write articles and it isn't possible to do everything.
What method has been most successful for promoting your website?
Article writing and submitting the articles to directories. Ezine articles has been one of the best article directories for me.
How has running your website differed from your expectations?
It is more work than I expected. I have to update my site daily. Even without much traffic I still update it. I've had to learn about search engine optimization and then put it into practice.
How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?
I've had the site up for about 8 months. I will keep it up for the two years I bought the domain name. After that it will depend on the traffic and the time I have available. But I really expect it to be a success and to be up for years.
What would you tell someone just starting out?
I would pick a niche that will allow you to get your site up on the first page of Google. This means a niche that isn't overcrowded. This might be hard as the web as gotten so big. I would learn all about search engine optimization before I started out creating the web site. I would also pick something you enjoy doing. Since you will be spending a lot of time working on your site. Come visit my site.
